This is an IN-PERSON CLASS.

Everyone knows older tools are better tools. The steel is better, the castings are cleaner, and the finishes are nicer. In this class we will be spending 5 days honoring the past by completely restoring vintage handplanes, drills, and rules.

Not only will this include getting the dust and spiders off of them, but re-polishing, flattening, and sharpening. We will also go in depth on advanced subjects (i.e how to re-japan (the shiny black coating on most old tools)), re-nickel plate, and if necessary braze cracks and broken parts back together.

This will be a chance to honor the legacy of tools and add some new equipment to your tool cabinet, while learning future skills to save money and keep old tools in circulation.

This will be a BYOTools based class. As such we are asking that the tools you bring be limited to hand planes, drills & braces, and measuring tools.

Please bring at least 2 items to restore, that being said there may be a chance mid week to go thrifting and picking as well.

All skill levels welcome.

No prerequisites.

WOO is a non-profit safe space for training underrepresented genders in our field. As such, enrollment is limited to non-binary, trans, and woman-identifying folks over the age of 18.

All class times are in U.S. Eastern Time.

Eleanor Ingrid Rose is a craft based sculpture artist and a toolmaker. She has an MFA in Wood from UW-Madison and works alongside Stacy Motte in their collaborative project Ladies Who Wood.
