Wood is an impressive natural material that comes from a once living thing. Even if it has been dried, it will forever be expanding, moving, and changing shape.

In this class, students will learn about the characteristics of wood as a material as well as how to utilize knowledge of wood movement and common defects to search for the right material for a project. Students will be encouraged to actively learn about different types of wood by experimenting with how different grain structures react to water and temperature.

The instructor will demonstrate the overall structure of wood, how varying types respond to moisture, and how to anticipate how any given wood will behave. She will also take you through what to expect and how to shop at a lumber or sawmill.

No prerequisites, all skills level welcome.  All you need is a computer and a good internet connection!

Larissa Huff is an instructor, furniture maker, and part owner at Lohr Woodworking in Schwenksville, PA. She began learning the craft as so many do, after abandoning a career as a math teacher and answering an ad for an apprenticeship on Craigslist. After nearly 10 years as a full-time maker, she now designs and builds custom furniture in collaboration with her co-owner of Lohr Woodworking where they also mill much of their own material and teach courses in their studio. She has written several articles for Woodcraft Magazine and travels to show her work at craft shows a few times a year. Larissa lives in Philadelphia, still loves math, and will leave a trail of handwritten lists in her wake everywhere she goes.
