What is Wood?

What is Wood?

$15

Our most basic class introduces students to fundamental characteristics of wood as well as to jargon and practical marketplace information.

Wood is a material that grows all around us. Most of us interact with wood everyday in our built environment. And now you want to use this living material to make your own work. This class explores how wood works, how it behaves over time. We'll learn about wood grain, grain direction, medullary rays. We'll talk about different common species of wood. We'll review how to choose lumber at the lumber yard, and talk about how lumber is sold.

Mostly a lecture class, with some time spent on the bandsaw. Students walk away with new knowledge and a WOO-made wooden barometer (take the class if you don't know what that is!).
