Figure & Furniture: A drawing class with Zoe Hong

A Workshop of Our Own & Baltimore Ladies Draw present:

Figure & Furniture: a drawing class with Zoe Hong

The best way to clearly demonstrate the scale of a piece of furniture is to illustrate a person with the design. Understanding how the human body relates to furniture can also help you design furniture better.

This class will cover the basics of figure drawing: capturing a pose, figure proportions, basic anatomy. We’ll seat a figure on an existing chair and then we’ll design a chair around a seated figure. This is a class developed for beginners; no previous figure drawing experience necessary.

Materials students should bring:
Paper with some sort of hard surface to draw on, like a hardcover sketchbook or drawing board

Drawing implement of choice: pencils, pens, soft pastel, charcoal, charcoal pencil, conte crayon, markers, any or all of the above

WOO is a non-profit safe space for training underrepresented genders in our field. As such, enrollment is limited to women and gender non-conforming folks over the age of 18.

Zoe Hong has been drawing since she could first wrap her chubby toddler fingers around a crayon. Eventually moving past stick figures wearing triangle skirts, Zoe graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a BFA in Fashion Design. After over a decade working in the fashion industry, Zoe transitioned into her new love: teaching. She taught fashion design, illustration, and color theory courses at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In 2015 she started her YouTube channel, which is full of fashion design, illustration, figure drawing, color theory, and industry practices tutorials. Zoe currently splits her time making videos, taking on freelance projects, writing her book on fashion design process, and traveling to teach workshops.
